Following his retirement announcement at the age of 81, Silverstone Auctions is offering the chance to acquire a Piaggio Vespa scooter with just one name in the log book: Sir Stirling Moss. Used as his paddock bike at race meetings and on the streets around his London home, the W-registration Piaggio ET4 Vespa in silver grey has under 2000 miles on the clock. Sold with a V5 in Sir Stirling’s name, the scooter is currently on a SORN (off road) and in a private collection. Expected to achieve between £6,000 and £8,000 at auction, it’s a rare opportunity to start the engine on a vehicle belonging to a racing legend! If two wheels isn’t enough then a three-wheel Messerschmitt KR200 Kabrio is also being offered at Silverstone Auctions’ 23 July sale. Estimated to be one of only 158 Messerschmitt models on the road today* from the 6000 imported into Britain during the 1950s, the quirky ‘bubble cars’ achieve speeds up to 65 mph and return around 80 miles to the gallon, ... less

Coming from five generations of auctioneers, Jonathan’s own Northamptonshire auction business is also based near Silverstone. Jonathan, who has presided over the sale of important motor cars from Aston Martin to Rolls Royce, rare automotive items and has a heritage in military memorabilia, will take to the rostrum to offer around 50 automobile lots during the sale at Silverstone Circuit. The charismatic Jonathan will present cars ranging from a 1926 Fiat 503B two-seater open tourer estimated between £8,000 and £12,000, to the Formula One car that gave James Hunt his first Grand Prix win in 1975, expected to achieve around £475,000. “I’m delighted to be working with Silverstone Auctions to present such a fabulously eclectic range of cars for all tastes and pockets,” said Jonathan. “There will be a fantastic atmosphere and some sig... less

Classic Rallies posted new blog entry Follow in the driving seat of Formula One’s late, great, James Hunt – in his Austin 35 Van!:

For those who want to own a piece of Formula One history, but can’t stretch to Formula One cars themselves, then James Hunt’s 1967 Austin 35 Van Countryman conversion could be the route to an ‘F1 drive’. For sale at Silverstone Auctions’ 23 July event, the car has been in storage for 18 years since its current owner acquired it in 1993, when it still had James Hunt’s last cigarette butts in the ashtray and a sprinkling of Trill in the rear where he transported his beloved budgerigars to shows! Still used by Hunt as his daily transport at the time of his death in 1993, Hunt’s affection for the car was well-documented, including the car’s ability at the hands of Hunt to ‘slide’ and take on much faster sports cars around London. The car starts and runs, but would likely need some mechanical attention before being put back on the road, and a well-worn interior bears testament to the car’s lifetime, including its flamboyant and ‘bird-lov... less

The Formula One car that took legendary driver James Hunt to his first Grand Prix race victory is to be sold at Silverstone Auctions’ 23 July event, during the Silverstone Classic weekend. Giving both James Hunt and Hesketh Racing their first Grand Prix win at the 1975 Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, and the only race victory for Hesketh, chassis 308/2 is the most famous and prolifically raced Hesketh car. With 23 Grand Prix starts, 17 of which were driven by James Hunt, 308/2 is the last privately entered car to win a Grand Prix without commercial sponsorship. The white car with red and blue stripes and famous Hesketh Racing teddy bear logo remained in team principal Lord Hesketh’s private ownership until 2007. Hesketh Racing, founded in 1972, originally competed with little success with Hunt in Formula Three until Lord Hesketh announced that, as the costs were nearly the same, they ‘might as well lose in Formula One as Three’. Entering Formula One in 1973 with a March 731 chassis,... less

The watch is one of four purchased and engraved by Mike ‘the bike’ Hailwood, whose ‘bike racing career spanned numerous Isle of Man TT as well as Superbike world championship wins. A subsequent motor racing career saw him crowned Formula 2 European champion, take third place in Le Mans 24 Hours and drive a McLaren in Formula One from which he retired aged 34 following a serious crash at the Nurburgring in 1974. In 1978, he came out of retirement to embark on what many regarded as madness: with his best friend Ted Macauley orchestrating his return, Mike Hailwood won his fourteenth Isle of Man TT on a Ducati 900, after which he presented the watches to his close ‘family’ team of four, including the current sale watch given in ’78 to Ted Macauley. In generally unworn conditi... less

A 1961 Jaguar E-Type, born on 10 July 1961, and a rare BMW Z8 in the same specification as James Bond’s car in ‘The World Is Not Enough’, have joined the roster of classic and modern supercars at Silverstone Auctions’ 23 July sale during the Silverstone Classic weekend. Already generating early interest, such vehicles prove the benefits of auction lots accompanied by as much historical and anecdotal detail as possible. Auctioneer Guy Loveridge points out the benefits to clients of providing as much insight and heritage into the vehicles they’re considering selling, particularly classics. “For example, we have an exceptional Jaguar E-Type, fifty years old in the E-Type’s fiftieth anniversary year. It features the outside bonnet locks of the first 91 right-hand drive Roadster cars: now the most collectable and valuable of E-Types built,” says Guy. “The car featured at Silverstone Auctions is chassis number 80, and thus the eightieth E-Type Roadster produce... less
