The iconic 1970 Porsche 911s formerly owned by the ‘King of Cool’ Steve McQueen and featured in his epic Hollywood film Le Mans sold for an impressive $1,375,000 before a packed house at RM’s Monterey, CA sale last night, setting a new world record for a 911 sold at auction. Built to the highest 1970 specification and with a full complement of factory options, the Slate Grey 911S stars in the film’s legendary opening sequence as McQueen’s character, hotshot Porsche driver, Michael Delaney, drives through the French countryside, reflecting on life, death, and racing. In addition to its starring role in the film, the Porsche 911S was used as McQueen’s personal transport during the movie’s production, later joining his own stable of extraordinary motor cars in California. An American Corvette racing icon, this example was delivered new as a factory L88 Corvette before becoming one of three “Stars & Stripes” team cars sponsored by BF Goodridge (BFG) during the 1971-1973 seasons. Numbered #49, it was initially slated for promotional use by BFG, although quickly converted to racing specification and powered by one of the last Traco-built ZL-1 motors. Driven by top road course drivers of the period, including John Greenwood, Bob Johnson, Dick Smothers and Don Yenko, its initial major win was a first place in the GT class in 1972 at the Watkins Glen six-hour race. In 1973, the #49 “Stars & Stripes” BFG team car raced in the trifecta of FIA events: the 12 Hours of Sebring, the 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it set the GT speed record of 215 mph on the Mulsanne straight in qualifying.
