Jason Minshaw and Martin O’Connell shared the victories in two fabulous E-type Challenge races at the HSCC’s Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting (28/29 August). The victories for Minshaw and Stretton made it five winners in eight races in the E-type Challenge season and came after two enthralling races left the results in doubt until the flag. Seasoned race commentator Ian Titchmarsh described the races as two of the best of the 2011 season. The E-type Challenge, celebrating 50 years of the Jaguar E-type, is managed by the Historic Sports Car Club in conjunction with Jaguar Heritage and is supported by JD Classics and runs with two classes, for cars prepared to a period race trim and standard cars. The series moved to the Cheshire track for the concluding pair of races and from another capacity grid it was Jon Minshaw who claimed pole position during a very wet qualifying session. Right behind was Martin Stretton, regularly Minshaw’s co-driver in longer races, but this time at the wheel of Mar... less

John Burton made it four wins from six races in the Martini Trophy when the series switched to Oulton Park for the HSCC’s Gold Cup meeting (28/29 August). Created by the Historic Sports Car Club, the Martini Trophy is for the 2-litre sports-racing cars of the 1970s and has a four-event schedule in 2011. The Oulton Park races marked the third weekend of the season and the 2-litre cars made a great spectacle as Oulton Park hosted its first 2-litre sports car race. For the second event running Burton was the class of the pack in his Chevron B26 as the pair of races followed similar patterns. Twice Charlie Kemp (Lola T210) chased the flying Chevron to earn a brace of second places overall as well as a double victory in the class for non-winged cars. “Charlie kept me honest all the way through,” said Burton. “He drives brilliantly and I couldn’t let up for a second,” said Burton. Kemp was pleased to have stayed in touch with the newer car. “I never gave up,” s... less

Martin Stretton bagged a mighty double win as the Historic Formula 2 Championship switched to the fabulous Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit over the weekend (2/3 July) as one of the major attractions at the HSCC Historic Superprix. A superb 29-car field gathered for the fourth weekend of Historic F2 racing in the series managed by the Historic Sports Car Club and the field made a great sight as pole man Darwin Smith (March 722) and Stretton (March 742) headed the pack into the opening race. Smith grabbed the lead off the line and Stretton had a moment at Graham Hill Bend on the opening lap, but within a couple of laps Stretton had tigered ahead and went on to score a clear victory. “The car was very over-steery,” reported Stretton. “Darwin was driving really well; he’s very tough but fair.” As the race developed Smith was suffering from a failing battery and was being caught at the flag by Andrew Smith (March 79B). “I was hoping there would be another lap,” said Andrew... less

Created by the Historic Sports Car Club, the Martini Trophy is for the 2-litre sports-racing cars of the 1970s and has a four-event schedule in 2011. The Brands Hatch races marked the second weekend of the schedule and the cars made a great sight as they raced at Brands for the first time since the mid-1970s. Burton was the class of the opening race as he rocketed into a commanding lead on the opening lap. As the 2-litre veteran built his lead lap by lap, there was a wonderful battle for second place over the first half of the race. Charlie Kemp (Lola T210), Doug Hart (March 75S), Richard Evans (Osella Abarth PA1) and Steve Hodges (Chevron B31) ran in close formation until a broken throttle cable sidelined Hart after five laps. “I love Brands Hatch GP circuit; it is one of my favourite tracks,” said Burton after his ... less

The new E-type Challenge, conceived to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Jaguar E-type, has received massive support with 68 cars now registered for the series, more than six weeks ahead of the opening race at Brands Hatch on 2/3 July. The series, managed by the Historic Sports Car Club, in conjunction with Jaguar Heritage, is supported by JD Classics and is running with two classes, for cars prepared to a period race trim and standard cars, and with strict eligibility checks. The season starts at Brands Hatch and then moves to the Silverstone Classic over the weekend of 22-24 July, where a new record will be set for the greatest number of E-types ever in a race. The season continues at the Nurburgring and Oulton Park in August. “We are absolutely delighted with the response and our aim is to start a maximum grid of 58 cars at Silverstone,” said Grahame White of the HSCC. The Martini Trophy got off to a great start at Silverstone (14/15 May) with Ed Lovett taking a pair of victories during the HSCC International Trophy meeting on the Grand Prix circuit. Created by the Historic Sports Car Club, the Martini Trophy is for the 2-litre sports-racing cars of the 1970s and has a four-event schedule in 2011. A very encouraging 20-car field arrived at Silverstone, with tremendous quality including former Le Mans racer John Sheldon and period 2-litre racer John Burton. However, it was Lovett who made the running in his Lola T296, twice out-pacing the March 75S of Doug Hart. Saturday’s victory marked Lovett’s first overall race win, although oil and then light rain made it a testing race. But Lovett kept it all together to stay six seconds clear of the battle between Hart and Burton (Chevron B26). “It went perfectly,” said Lovett after a famous victory. Racing for the first time since late in 2009, Burton pushed Hart hard over the opening half of the race before b... less

From a fabulous 32-car entry, Watts (March 772) and Stretton (March 742) were again the class of the field to take a win apiece, while Andrew Smith (March 79B) drove superbly to twice take the Formula Atlantic category and even claim an overall podium. The tone for the weekend was set in qualifying when Stretton pipped Watts to pole by just a tenth of a second. Peter Meyrick (March 782) and David Methley (Chevron B35) were within half a second of the pole time as Smith, in seventh overall, headed the Formula Atlantic class and Diogo Ferrao (March 712) topped the 1600cc F2 cars. With a monster opening lap, Stretton led the first race for 11 laps with Watts a constant shadow. However, Stretton was then forced into the pits and retirement with a damaged nose cone, which left Watts away clear for victory. Throug... less

The championship, managed by the UK-based Historic Sports Car Club, is open to cars built to period regulations for Formula 2, Formula Atlantic and Formula B, starting from 1967 and running right through to the end of the 1978 season. Later cars, designed to employ ground effect technology, are not permitted. The 32-car entry is certainly the biggest since the HSCC took over the management of the category and is thought to be the biggest ever for Formula 2 as a period class. At least half a dozen new drivers will make their F2 debut at Donington, including historic racing veteran Frank Sytner who will be racing the ex-Sean Walker March 782. British racers Martin Stretton and Matthew Watts shared the victories as the Historic Formula 2 Championship started at Hockenheim in Germany over the weekend (16/17 April). Stretton won the opener in his March 742, while Watts won the second race in his March 772 as Darwin Smith (March 722) impressed on his debut run in the championship. The former modern single-seater ace from Northern Ireland ran strongly against the two more experienced F2 racers, but was forced to retire from the second race with an overheating engine. The tone for the weekend was set in qualifying as Stretton, Watts and Smith set the top three times. Stretton stamped his authority on the opening race from the start as Smith battled ahead of Watts. Eventually, Watts got back ahead of Smith but Stretton was out of reach as oil went down and made the track very slippery. Watts even had a quick spin on the oil at the Sachs Kurve, but didn’t lose a place. Peter Wuensch (Ralt RT1) headed Richard Eyre (March 782) for fourth, while Diog... less
