Jaguar E-types continue to hold the interest of buyers, due in part certainly to the fact it is the model’s 50th anniversary year, but perhaps also due to the realisation that the model has perhaps been under-valued for too long. Consequently, top price of the day at Barons’ sale at Sandown Park on July 26th was achieved by a sound and triple-Weber-converted 1969 Series 2 fixed-head, making a little under 20 grand at £19,720. Quality and preparation are the watchwords at present, and three of the strongest-sellers proved the point. While a diverse selection, the common theme was their superb condition. From the 1970 Mini Cooper ‘S’ MkIII at £12,330 to the 1993 Range Rover LSE at £4,670 buyers did not find condition wanting, but the title of ‘best-presented car of the sale’ fell without doubt to the 1972 Lotus Elan +2S 130. The auction celebrated all models of the much-loved marque, but it was particularly fitting that, in its 50th anniversary year, the quintessential ‘big cat’, the E-type, was the star of the show and had bidders (and vendors!) purring with pleasure. Nine of these stunning cars were on offer, and all nine sold. Unusually, S3 V12 roadsters made up a large part of the E-type entry, but results proved that interest in these is stronger than it has ever been. Of the four examples offered, not one sold for less than £31,000, and the chart topper – a magnificent, bright red 1972 machine - achieved over £39,000. An impressive pack of Jaguars will slink into Sandown Park for Barons’ annual Jaguar Heritage sale on April 19th. Headlining the event are an immaculate, concours-condition 1948 3.5-litre drophead coupé and a truly unique 1959 MKIX 6.0 saloon which has been rebuilt at a cost of over £85,000. And this year’s auction marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic cars of all time, the E-type, so, fittingly, there are also some fine examples of this legendary model. Headliners The outstanding 1948 3.5-litre drophead coupé has been the subject of a meticulous, nut and bolt restoration. To confirm the quality of the work, the car comes with official concours score sheets from the Jaguar Clubs of North America, where it consistently scored over 99.5 points with a best score of 99.82. The 1967 250SL was offered for auction in need of total restoration, although its long period of barn storage had been kind to it and it remained very sound throughout. Coming to auction from a deceased’s estate, the car was non-running and the keys had long-since been lost. Despite this, the generally sound condition and long period of single ownership fired the interest of collectors and with spirited bidding from buyers in the room and on the telephones the car was sold at a resounding £12,430. Other cars needing some remedial work also created a lot of interest. A 1969 Jaguar E-Type fixed head coupe created a bit of a stir despite needing a total bare metal respray. Although the panels were very sound, a careless paintjob in the past had left this pale blue 4.2 with a peeling and cracked finish over its entire surface, but despite this, the car had an e... less
