Interesting Classic cars and classic rally cars for sale

H&H next auction of Automobilia and Motor Cars takes place on 19th & 20th June at The Pavilion Gardens in Buxton. Here is our selection of interesting classic rally cars for sale:

A Citroen Visa 1000 Pistes rally Car, estimated at £7000 - 9000. Introduced in late 1983, the Citroen Visa Mille Pistes was designed to give amateur rally drivers access to the sport's ultimate Group B class. Eschewing the big budget / unlimited horsepower route chosen by the Lancia 037, Audi Quattro, Peugeot 205 T16 and Ford RS200 etc, the Citroen nevertheless made good use of Group B's 'open' rulebook. Under the direction of Guy Verrier, its monocoque bodyshell was pared back before being fitted with a selectable four-wheel drive system, plastic wheelarches, quad headlamps and bespoke grille motif (two double-chevrons linked by a X signifying 4WD). Weighing in at just 850kg, the Visa was powered by a twin Weber 40DCOE carburetor-fed 1360cc OHC four-cylinder engine allied to five-speed manual transmission. Developing some 112bhp in 'standard' tune or 145bhp in 'Evo' tune, just 200 cars were built for homologation purposes. Finishing 13th overall (1st in class) on its debut at the 1984 East African Safari Rally, the Mille Pistes caused an upset during that year's Lombard RAC when it split the Rothmans Team Porsche 911SC RS cars of Roger Clark and Saeed Al-Hajri to place 12th overall (1st in class). Though, the Citroen also achieved class wins on the Swedish (1986, 1987), Monte Carlo (1987), Portuguese (1987) and 1000 Lakes (1988) rallies.

Marin County's Peter Stoneberg captured the top spot on Saturday during qualifying at Infineon Raceway for the 21st annual Wine Country Classic Vintage Car Races.

Stoneberg, a resident of Belvedere, piloted his 1963 Lotus to victory in the seven-lap qualifying race for Group 6 (1961-1965 Sports Racing Cars) over the 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course. El Segundo's John Morton was second (1964 Lotus) with Oklahoma City's John Harden third (1963 Huffaker).

Stoneberg, who has never won at the Wine Country Classic, led the qualifying race wire-to-wire in his Lotus. He placed second in last year's main event behind Simi Valley's Terry Miller. Stoneberg also placed second in 2004 driving a 1968 McLaren.

"This event is a big one, and I'd definitely like to win it. It's really one of the crown jewels of vintage racing," said Stoneberg. "It's fun to have lots of friends and family here cheering for me in the stands."

More than 250 competitors attempted to qualify on Saturday in nine different racing groups, with Sunnyvale's John Buddenbaum taking the pole position in Group 4 (1956-1962 Production Cars). Other California-based top qualifiers included Markleeville's Leonard Turnbeau in Group 4 (1956-1962 Production Cars); Simi Valley's Terry Miller in Group 5 (1966-1972 Historic Trans-Am); and Petaluma's Randall Smith in Group 8 (1967-1980 IMSA and FIA Sports Racing Cars).

On 30th May 2007, the Ferrari 60 Relay arrived in Italy for its stage around the island of Sicily. While the Tour will end in less than a month in Maranello, today the cars gathered on Piazza Verdi in Palermo, waiting for the stage to start. Cars from Ferrari, from the present and the past, participated in today's stage, while also the winner of the legendary Targa Florio of the year 1965, Nino Vaccarella, aka "the flying director", with his 275 P2 joined the event. The Tour drove through uncontaminated nature over a stretch of the old Targa Florio route. The 1965 Targa Florio and Vaccarella's victory that year, inspired one of the official symbols of the Ferrari 60 Relay, shown on the baton.

The baton, displaying 60 symbols, arrives in Italy for the final celebrations in Maranello, after traversing the five continents

Maranello, May 2007 - On Wednesday, 30th May, the baton - which has been carried around the globe by over 10,000 Ferraristi in their cars from every era - will officially arrive in Italy. By then the baton, with its 60 symbols - representing the most important events in the history of the brand - has traversed the five continents.

Along the way from Sicily in the South to the Alps in the North and eventually arriving at the headquarters in Maranello on 23rd June, the Ferrari 60 Relay will continue collecting objects dedicated to Ferrari, representing the countries and the Italian regions, which have been passed by the Tour: such as a shirt from Brazil signed by Pelé, or a 60 cm high Russian matryoshka, containing additional 30, and a helmet made out of ceramics, signed by Michael Schumacher, which had been handed over in Berlin.

The more than 50 objects will be exposed in Rome at the Farnesina, the building of the foreign ministry, on 16th June, and will be handed over to Ferrari in an official ceremony. The entire collection will then be sold at a charity auction in Maranello on 23rd June.

The 2007 Gold Cup Historic Races at VIRginia International Raceway

The 2007 Gold Cup Historic Races at VIRginia International Raceway will celebrate the 50th anniversary of VIR’s opening in 1957. It was the weekend of August 3-4 that year, and Carroll Shelby won the feature race in John Edgar’s Maserati 450S, ahead of Walt Hansgen and Charlie Wallace in Briggs Cunningham’s D-Type Jaguars. We only get one chance to celebrate a 50th anniversary, and we’re planning to do it right.

The date will be June 8-10, 2007, and we are already working on the details. On hand for the occasion will be a number of very (and we mean very) special guests and cars. Among our special guests will be Carroll Shelby, who has graciously agreed to serve as Grand Marshal, and the legendary motorsports journalist Chris Economaki, who served as the announcer for VIR’s inaugural race in 1957. There will be no featured marque, other than “VIR History Cars and Drivers.” We have also commissioned a painting from artist Mike Mate, which will depict the most significant cars in the track’s history. An entry form is available below, and we advise you to get your entries and your hotel reservations in early.
