Gentleman Jim becomes an official ambassador for SunCoast Classic

Seven times Targa Tasmania winner Jim Richards has been named as an official ambassador for Queensland’s first ever tarmac rally, the SunCoast Classic to be held in July this year. Richards, who is a seven times Bathurst 1000 winner as well, has also been named as an ambassador for the Classic Adelaide Rally, which along with the SunCoast Classic is run by leading rally organiser Silverstone Events.

“The SunCoast Classic will be a tremendous, with roads that will truly challenge all the drivers and a truly superb location,” said Jim Richards. Richards, a recent inductee into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame, will compete in more than ten tarmac rally events around the world in 2007 and believes that tarmac rallies are a safe and exciting form of motor racing.

“Obviously motorsport can be dangerous, but the SunCoast Classic and Classic Adelaide give competitors a safe and controlled environment to drive their vehicles”, said Richards.

Famous classic car collectors set to make SunCoast Classic a family affair

The unofficial caretakers of Australia’s motorsport heritage, the Bowden Family, has thrown its full weight behind the inaugural SunCoast Classic Rally by both sponsoring and entering the event which will be Queensland’s first ever tarmac classic rally.

The Bowden Family owns and tends a collection of almost 90 classic race cars and road cars at its base on the Sunshine Coast as well as marketing a range of car care products, which were developed especially to preserve its fleet of valuable machines.

Patriarch David Bowden will watch from the sidelines as his two sones Chris and Dan take part in the SunCoast next July, with both choosing classic machines in which to compete. Chris Bowden will drive the car Ford built to tackle the famous Monte Carlo Rally in the early 1960s, the Falcon Sprint coupe, while brother Dan is yet to choose a classic car from the family collection but will likely contest the touring category.

According to Chris Bowden the SunCoast Classic will be a fantastic event and the perfect opportunity to use some of the classic cars from the collection in the manner they were intended to be used. “I am eagerly awaiting the SunCoast Classic, I have been in love with the concept since I heard that Silverstone Events was going to run it,” said Chris.
“I chose the Sprint because it was the car that Ford really built to win the Monte Carlo, it is a true classic tarmac rally car with plenty of grunt from its 289 cubic inch Ford V8 and all the right bits to make it a both competitive and fun to drive,” he said.

Audi Tradition at the Techno Classica 2007

At the 19th Techno Classica Essen show being held from 29 March - 1 April 2007, Audi Tradition is once again exhibiting in Hall 7 where its stand revolves around the brand's "75 Years of the Four Rings" anniversary. Audi Tradition has also chosen this international classic car show as the backdrop for the public unveiling of three recently restored and extremely rare motor sport cars – all from the pre-quattro era. Also present on the Audi stand again are the Audi museum mobile Ingolstadt, the August Horch Museum Zwickau and the Audi Club International (ACI) as the umbrella organisation of the Audi clubs and of all clubs of the predecessor brands.

The history of Audi is one of the most diverse in automotive history. In 1932, the four brands of Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer amalgamated to form Auto Union AG, with the symbol of the four rings as the company emblem. This merger made Auto Union Germany's second-largest car manufacturer in the 1930s. The wide-ranging brand portfolio that was synonymous with the four rings at that time is represented in Essen by the following exhibits: the exclusive Horch 670 Sport Cabriolet with 12-cylinder engine (120 bhp at 3200 rpm) from 1932, the nippy two-seater DKW F5 Roadster (20 bhp at 3500 rpm) from 1937, the sporty and elegant Wanderer W 25 K Roadster (85 bhp at 4000 rpm) from 1938, as well as a best-selling model from 1939, the Audi 920 Cabriolet with a 6-cylinder in-line engine (75 bhp at 3000 rpm). Rekindling memories of DKW's motorcycle glory days, meanwhile, is the DKW UL 700 sidecar combination from 1936: this was the year that this very combination won the German Championship, before going one better in 1937 and taking both the German and the European Championships.

Raring to go – Chevron B1 Mk2

The ultimate 1960s Clubman’s racer, the Chevron B1, has been reborn as a production roadster by marque owner Chevron Racing Cars.

The original B1 was built to beat the then all-conquering Lotus 7, which it did – first time out. Part of the B1’s secret was independent rear suspension, in contrast to the live axle arrangement characterising its ‘7’ contemporaries.

The Chevron B1 Mk2 is powered by Ford’s 1.6 litre four-cylinder, single overhead camshaft RoCam unit. It is being shown in production prototype guise at Race Retro. The car in its finalised form will be revealed in a few weeks time.

The development programme is now in its last, fine tuning phases. Performance figures and definitive specification will be released when road and track testing have been finally completed.

In the meantime, light weight, low centre of gravity, minimum frontal area, front mid-engine layout, 95 bhp, 101 lb/ft of torque at 2,500 rpm and a five-speed gearbox combine to promise the performance and agility that will put a smile on your face – and keep it there.
