1979, FISA legalized all-wheel-drive for rallying. the
manufacturers involved in rallying at the time considered four-wheel.drive
too heavy and complex to be successful. They were all proven wrong
when Audi launched its new Quattro in 1980, and announced its
intention toouse the 1980 and 1981 seasons as development years.
The full potential of four-wheel-drive was realized when Audi pilo
Hannu Mikkola used a Quattro as a course opening vehicule for one
rally. Had mikkola been entered, he would have won by nine minutes.

The last Targa Sixty-Six meeting for 2006 was held at Roebling Road
Raceway, Savannah Georgia.
Beautiful cool temperatures and blue sunny skies greeted the members
of Targa Sixty-Six as we all prepared to see how Roebling Road Raceway
was with its newly repaved track surface. Initial reports were good,
very smooth with most members improving on their lap times from
previous years.
Regular attendees such as Mike and Cheri Amalfitano, the Schumann
family, Don Marsh, Neil Huffman, Bill Mazzoni, Jeff Mennen and others
were on hand to get some seat time and welcome new members. Targa is a
unique club in that you can get as much time behind the wheel of your classic
car as you can stand. Some members log as much as 6-8 hours
on the track per weekend while others go out, have a bit of fun then
wander the paddock visiting old friends and making new ones before
venturing back to the track for some more driving excitment.
