The Capitol Concours d’Elegance Opening Dinner Gala will be held on the 25th floor of the US Bank building Saturday, September 18 from 6:00PM-10:00PM. The Kemp Auto Museum’s award-winning 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A received accolades at the recent Fourth Annual Kansas City Art Institute “Art of the Car” ConcoursTM, held in Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday, June 27, 2010.

The Art of the Car Concours™, a benefit for student scholarships at the Kansas City Art Institute, is the largest vintage car show in Kansas City. It featured a wide variety of vintage, classic and special interest vehicles belonging to Kansas City area and national collectors. Vintage race cars, motorcycles, bicycles and fire trucks also were included in the show.

The Concours will have a German theme this year. Mercedes Benz is the featured marque and the Concours’ 23 classes will include four classes of Mercedes Benz, two of Porsche, two of BMW, one each of Borgward and Volkswagen plus German race cars and motor cycles. Time is running out to submit a barn find for the Fairfield County Concours d’Elegance national barn find search! One month ago, the Fairfield County Concours d’Elegance kicked off a national search to uncover long-lost historic vehicles from across the nation, for display in a featured judging class at its 7th annual event, held on September 12, 2010 at the Fairfield County Hunt Club in Westport, Conn.

So far, the Concours reports that it has received some great submissions, but the search continues through July 30.

“We are really seeing some great vehicles, but the search isn’t over just yet” said Bill Scheffler, Co-Founder and Chairman of the Fairfield County Concours d’Elegance. “We’re on the hunt for the best of America’s long-lost automotive treasures and we want to make sure we’re seeing as much as possible.”

One submission in particular, a 1949 Willys Panel Wagon, has caught the eye of some so far. The rare vehicle is in good condition but generally unrestored, containing all of its original emblems, hubcaps, bumpers. The vehicle was found in an old Hollywood, Calif. garage, where it had been resting for 46 years, before the current owner retrieved it.

The Kemp Auto Museum’s award-winning 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A took top honors at the recent Ault Park Concours d’Elegance, held in Cincinnati, Ohio the weekend of June 12-13, 2010.

The 2010 Ault Park Concours d’Elegance theme and featured marque was “International Designers and Coachbuilders”, highlighting fine motor vehicles from France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and the United States. This world class exhibition in motoring excellence benefited The Arthritis Foundation and Children with Juvenile Arthritis, with the exclusive “Jay Leno Auto Collection Dream Tour” raffle. Over 200 rare and classic automobiles from around the world were presented at the show.

The Museum’s 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A was recognized as both the “Featured Marque International Designers and Coachbuilders Germany” and the prestigious “Chairman’s Choice” Award at the Ault Park Councours.

Hypercars from the past at the 5th Salon Privé Concours d’ Elégance

The 5th Salon Privé Concours d’ Elégance in association with Chubb Insurance which takes place at the Hurlingham Club on 21-23 July, has pulled together one of the finest and rarest collections of 200mph ‘Hypercars’ from the past 40 years.

“These cars have formed the basis of every car-loving schoolboy’s dreams over the past four decades”, says Andrew Bagley, co-founder of Salon Privé. “At one point or another, each of these cars has represented the pinnacle of supercar engineering and performance and in the case of the Panther Six, the epitome of exclusivity and rarity.”

The Panther Six on display is one of only two cars ever made, one white, one black. Described as ‘arguably the most famous supercar of the 1970’s’ , the car’s six wheeled design, outrageous appearance and huge specification, make it as much of a crowd-stopper today as it was at launch in 1977. With power coming from a twin turbocharged 8.2 litre Cadillac V8, claimed to develop over 600bhp, the car boasted a phenomenal top speed in excess of 200mph. This particular half of the only existing pair is currently for sale with Geneva-based classic car consultant and broker, Simon Kidston.

Other entrants in the class, whilst perhaps less outrageous, are no less desirable. Ferrari has always been at the pinnacle of supercar engineering and its two flagships from two consecutive decades, the F40 & F50, represent the pinnacle of the Maranello firm’s dedication to producing the ultimate performance cars. Porsche’s 1980’s development of the 911 into Group B rallying specification spawned the awesome four-wheel drive 959, while Jaguar’s 1990’s foray into the supercar arena produced the rare and immensely fast XJ220. Other ‘hypercar’ rarities such as the Aston Martin V600 Le Mans and Bugatti EB110 GT will also grace the lawns of the Hurlingham Club. For many though, the undoubted king of the modern supercar era, McLaren’s iconic F1, will be the undisputed highlight of their visit to Salon Privé.

Andy Granatelli Named Marshal of Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance

Automobile racing legend Andy Granatelli will be the Grand Marshal of the 18th annual Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance to be held at the Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes on Sunday, September 19, 2010.

Concours Chairman Peter Kunoth said, "Andy built and raced the world-famous Indianapolis turbine engine cars in 1967 and 1968, and his race cars won the Indianapolis 500 twice. His business accomplishments are still talked about in financial circles. He took an unknown company called Chemical Compounds, changed its name to STP, and in nine years it zoomed from seven to over 2,000 employees. He made STP a household word."

The Concours will have a decidedly Germanic feel this year, according to Kunoth. The overall theme will be “German Fest,” with Mercedes Benz as the featured marque. The Concours’ 23 classes will include four classes of Mercedes Benz, two of Porsche, two of BMW, one each of Borgward and Volkswagen plus German race cars and motor cycles. American and European classics and unique race cars will round out the competitive classes.

The 2010 Road Rallye d’ Epicure will be held on Saturday, September 18, beginning at Trump National and ending at the Edelbrock Automotive Museum in Torrance. It will feature a treasure hunt whose theme will be The Pirates of PV, according to Rallye Chairman Greg Sparkman. Unlike in previous years, the Road Rallye will be an afternoon event, beginning at 2 p.m. and ending at 5. The Grand Marshal reception and silent auction will follow at the Edelbrock Museum from 5 to 8 p.m.

The Concours’ Restoration Alley, where craftsmen demonstrate the art of restoring valuable automobiles, will also be dubbed Wiederherstellungsallee and catering will include German food, beer and wine.

The premier winners, the coveted ‘Best of Show’ and ‘People’s Choice’ awards were chosen today for the prestigious Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance, held at the historic La Quinta Resort and Club in La Quinta, California.

Sunday’s Concours d’Elegance top honor, “Best of Show” was awarded to a 1930 Cadillac Fleetwood Roadster, owned by Aaron & Valerie Weiss of San Marino, CA.

Other significant awards on Sunday included “People’s Choice” awarded to a 1929 Rolls-Royce Ascot Tourer, owned by C. Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2010: the place to be for perfection and elegance

For anyone with a fondness for spring and an appreciation of the Italian way of life, Lake Como in April has always been hard to beat. And the world-famous Grand Hotel Villa d’Este is the perfect base for those looking to revel in the lakeside ambience rather than merely bed down for the night. Should the same people also share a love of fine cars, the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este will deliver the perfect weekend. All of which means that the dates 23 – 25 April are likely to have been among the first in any auto enthusiast’s diary.

This will be the 12th time that the automotive beauty contest has been held under the patronage of the BMW Group. “We are very proud that, working with the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este, we have made the Concorso one of the world’s top classic car events,” said Karl Baumer, President of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and Director of BMW Group Classic. Dr Jean-Marc Droulers, President of Villa d’Este S.p.A., also underlined the importance of the event for his company: “The Concorso offers an atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else. The manufacturers focused on professionalism, flawlessness and elegance when it came to building their cars, and we’re following a similar blueprint with the Concorso.”

BMW’s Italian job

The relationship between BMW and Italy is by no means limited to the Concorso. This year sees the 70th anniversary of one of the greatest moments in the history of BMW Motorsport: victory in the 1940 Mille Miglia. The hero of the day 70 years ago was the BMW 328. Just 464 examples of the Roadster were built over the four years from 1936 to 1940, but that was enough to put the wind up its rivals. A racing version of the 328 made its debut in the legendary Italian car race in 1938 – and filled the top four places in its class at the first attempt. BMW lined up for the final pre-war edition of the race two years later with a pair of 328 Coupés and three Roadster versions, for which a new and ultra-lightweight streamlined body had been developed. In the battle to shed the seconds, its head-turning contours successfully reduced aerodynamic drag and shaped the path of automotive design for decades to come. The BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupé secured the brand its greatest triumph to date. Drivers Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and Walter Bäumer posted an average speed of 166.723 km/h on the way to securing overall victory in the race, and the coveted team prize also went to BMW. “Before we head to the Mille Miglia we will put all of our Mille Miglia cars on display to the public in a special exhibition at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. You could call it a team presentation,” said Karl Baumer, whetting the appetite for the planned BMW showcase at the Concorso.

2010 Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance returns To Trump National

The 18th annual Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance will return to Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA on Sunday, September 19, 2010 when more than 200 classic automobiles will be displayed on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Considered one of America’s best classic car exhibitions, the Concours’ overall theme will be “German Fest,” with Mercedes Benz as the featured marque. The Concours’ 23 classes will include American and European classics and unique race cars.

The 2010 Tour d’Epicure Road Rallye will be held on Saturday, September 18, beginning at Trump National and ending at the Edelbrock Automotive Museum in Torrance. The Grand Marshal reception and silent auction will be held at the Museum from 5 to 8 p.m.

The chairman of the Concours is Peter Kunoth; the exhibitors’ selection committee is headed by Bob Greenberg and Ray Johnson.

Proceeds will benefit the community and outreach programs of the Palos Verdes Art Center and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary Foundation. The Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance is a 501 (c) (3) tax-deductible nonprofit charity.

Meadow Brook Event Announces New Developments for 2010

The world-renowned event previously known as the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance will now be using its legally recognized name, Concours d’Elegance of America, beginning with the 2010 event scheduled for July 25 at the Meadow Brook estate.

Founded in 1977, the Concours was originally operated by the Meadow Brook Hall and has been held on the grounds of the Meadow Brook estate, located on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Michigan since its inception. In 2004 the event established a separate Board of Directors and became a registered non-profit 501 (c) (3) entity as the “Concours d'Elegance of America”.

In addition, the Concours d'Elegance of America Board of Directors is pleased to announce that James McCarter recently accepted the position of Executive Director for the event.

McCarter, a Michigan native and car guy from the very start, completed Chrysler’s MoTech Automotive Training Program before going on to earn an English degree from the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee.

McCarter’s professional background includes the founding and publishing of The Shepherd Express, a weekly newspaper in Milwaukee, from 1982 to 1990. From there he went on to publish newspapers in Minnesota and Michigan, including the Metro Times in Detroit, Michigan from 1995 to 2001. After leaving Metro Times, McCarter worked at Michigan Web Press where he developed press management software and became the first publisher of the LA View, a successful weekly newspaper in Lapeer County.

Categories announced for UK’s finest Concours display. World-leading specialist insurer, Chubb Insurance, has announced it will sponsor the 2010 Salon Privé Concours d’ Elégance, at the Hurlingham Club, on 21-23 July.

The agreement means the UK’s finest Concours competition will now be known as the “Salon Privé Concours d’ Elégance, in association with Chubb Insurance”.

Simon Mobey, UK & Ireland Personal Insurance Manager, Chubb Insurance, said: “Chubb is delighted to be sponsoring the Salon Privé Concours d’ Elégance. This is a unique event that celebrates the cream of the automotive world and our initial experience last year has convinced us to take a greater involvement in 2010. The cars on exhibit at the Concours are typical of the cars we insure, and we’re thrilled that some of our clients may show cars at the event.”

Salon Privé co-founder and managing director, Andrew Bagley, said: “We’re delighted to announce another fantastic Salon Privé Concours d’ Elegance. It’s now the biggest and best Concours d’ Elegance in the UK and it has become an important event in the in the European calendar for classic car connoisseurs. We believe that the cars we’ll be gathering together this year will eclipse previous years and provide visitors with a mouth-watering visual display.”

Fisker Karma makes Premiere at the Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance

The world’s first luxury plug-in hybrid car, the 2010 Fisker Karma, will make its West Coast debut at the Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance, in Palm Springs, California.

Recently unveiled at the January 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the four door premium electric drive sedan proves that driving style and performance need not be compromised for environmental friendliness.

According to Paul Merrigan, founder of the Desert Classic Concours d’Elegance, “In addition to the most significant classic cars, our event also features exciting new models demonstrating the best in design and technology.”
