In the Competition category, the Porsche crew of Howard Redhouse/Richard Shaw and John Grant/Charles Elwell set the early pace, with Redhouse narrowly taking the upper hand. In Regularity, Paul Hernaman/Ray Crowther take a 1.9 second advantage. And, in the fight for overall honours - the MOTUL Tour Britannia Trophy based on Index of Performance - Paul Howells, navigated by Travis drummer Neil Primrose, lead in another Porsche 911. Today's route took in a feast of action that covered racing at Kent's Brands Hatch circuit, as well as speed tests over sealed surface roads at the famous Brooklands race track and the Longcross testing ground. Britain's summer has finally arrived this week and the event has, for the third year in succession, enjoyed beautiful weather, great racing and wonderful camaraderie. At the end of first leg, the Porsche 911 of Howard Redhouse had the Competition category lead by the slimmest possible margin - just 0.1 sec - from John Grant's Chevron B16. Nick Whale’s Porsche 911 Carrera RS was a further 2.8 seconds adrift and the trio have already pulled out a welcome advantage over their rivals. It was Grant who set the pace at Brands Hatch this morning, the Briton powering the Chevron B16 to a 4.3 second win over Redhouse and Oliver Bryant in Joe Twyman’s Lotus 7. Nick Whale dominated over the two runs at Brooklands - run in front of the stunning new Mercedes Benz World - and both he and John Grant took victories respectively at Longcross. The Regularity category is led by Paul Hernaman and Ray Crowther in their Porsche 911. The duo won only one stage today - Brooklands 1 - but hold a 1.9 second lead over father and son team Julian and Adam Taylor, who won both stages at Longcross. Marc and Stefan Vandendijk, in a Lotus Elite, hold third having won the Brands Hatch section. Tomorrow’s second leg of MOTUL Tour Britannia takes the crews from Coombe Abbey, in Warwickshire, for another full day of action, including races at two of Britain’s finest circuits. After two runs at MIRA, the route then heads to Donington Park and onto the picturesque Belvoir Castle. From here, the crews head to Mallory Park for the second race of the day before returning to the event headquarters at Coombe Abbey.

QUOTES FROM THE CREWS #2 Marc Vandendijk/Stefan Vandendijk (B/B) – Triumph TR4A IRS “We’re enjoying it very much. The roads are great and it was my first time at Brands Hatch; a good day all round.” #3 Robert Newton/Mark Bennett (GB/GB) – Bristol 401 "It's been a very good jaunt this morning, very enjoyable." #4 Stanley Gold/Andy Prill (USA/GB) – Porsche 356 "Everything's excellent and it's beautiful weather for this California guy! I’m trying to remember to stay on the left hand side of the road too! Everything’s been absolutely perfect, a really good day. I love everything so far." #6 Sarah Moody/Justine Moody (GB/GB) – Ferrari Daytona "Brands Hatch was a blast! It's our first rally here and Dad's lovely car is taking good care of us." #7 Melanie Coburn/Nicolas Crossley (IRL/GB) – Porsche 356B Super 90 “Thoroughly enjoyable but we're taking it very steadily, being careful to use no more that 4000 rpm with the new engine." #9 Anthony Moody/Willie Gilbertson-Hart (GB) – Jaguar E Type "All's well, wonderful weather and the route has been great so far.” #14 Richard Clark/Louisa Banks (MC/MC) – Porsche 356 "It's been a really nice morning. We've just been toodling around so far." ![]() Click on the picture to enlarge #17 Michael Birch/Jeremy Haylock (GB/GB) – Porsche 911 Carrera RS “Excellent roads, good countryside, good car!” #21 Andrew Frankel/Jonathan Frankel (GB/GB) – Porsche 911 “The last road sections were brilliant, perfect.” #22 John Simister/Alona Simister (GB/GB) – Lancia Fulvia HF “We’ve been on a steep learning curve but it’s been a good day. We were pleased in Longcross, and Brooklands I think we did well.” #25 Brad Mottier/Bill Hoff (USA/USA) – Ford Bronco “A great day with super roads and the Windsor Long Walk was just awesome! How many people get to do that?” #26 Samuel Pearlman/Geoffrey Berg (GB/GB) – Porsche 911 Carrera RA “The throttle isn’t returning to closed, so it’s making things extremely interesting… We did Longcross like that but we’re having a great time anyway. We built the car especially for this event.” #27 Julian Taylor/Adam Taylor (GB/GB) – Ferrari Dino 246GT "What a wonderful way to start the day, in the sun at Brands!" #28 Mark Humphries/Matthew Humphries (GB/GB) – Jaguar XK120 "We've only just bought this car so we're taking it very easily and carefully." #29 Gareth Burnett/Maurice Hamilton (GB/GB) – Talbot 105 "The second or third lap at Brands Hatch the rotor arm came off and then it did the same thing a bit later on in the race. We've siliconed it on again and it's on its final warning, but we've got some catching up to do. Brooklands was a bit tight for this big car, but Longcross was great." #30 Patrick Blakeney-Edwards/Andrew Hall (GB/GB) – Frazer Nash “A wonderful day, but plenty of welding to do tonight…!” #34 Harvey Death/Elaine Macleod (GB/GB) – Morris Mini Cooper S “The car’s going really well; a few little niggles but very good in general. We’ve had a good day.” #37 Mark Midgley/Andrew Siddall (GB/GB) – Aston Martin DB2 "Brands Hatch was extremely interesting - I've never driven the circuit before. The car’s very good on the open roads but on the slow bits it’s difficult to keep the engine running cleanly. But we’ve still had a great day." #39 Bryan Brophy/Robert Brophy (IRL/IRL) – Alpine Renault A110 "The car stopped after the Brands race and wouldn't restart. Someone had turned a switch off that they thought was for a cooling fan, but it was the fuel pump. It's still very hard to start when hot so we've had a difficult day." ![]() Click on the picture to enlarge #42 Richard Frankel/Peter Flood (GB/GB) – Alfa Romeo GTam “This is an amazing car; it’s so bloody fast! At Longcross it was absolutely amazing. We’re running on Yokohamas for the first time and it understeers a bit, unlike the Dunlops we normally use, but I’m not even trying to find the limit. It’s wonderful, just wonderful.” #46 Rob Williams/Steve Winter (GB/GB) – Porsche 911 “We’ve had a great day. Brooklands was very slippery and Longcross was very fast – fabulous, and I love the chicanes and the blind brow. I think the car flew!” #49 Tony Fall/Yvonne Mehta (GB/GB) – Datsun 240Z “I was taking some interesting lines at Brands, compared to the others. I was using the outside where the marbles should be, but there weren't any." #55 Mike Anderson/Alan Brown (GB/GB) – Porsche 911S "Brands Hatch was terrible for me, the tyres went off and there was just no grip so we were sliding about all over the place. I didn't enjoy it at all." #56 Yves Junne/Elke Middedorp (F/D) – Porsche 911 "I've rediscovered the circuit (Brands Hatch), as I've not driven it for many years so I was being careful." #66 Richard Lloyd/Alan Rivers (GB/GB) – Chevrolet Camaro Z28 "Brands Hatch brings back a lot of memories. I think the last time I raced there was in '74. It was good though - we were the first of the "muscle cars." #67 Kurt Engelhorn/Wil Arif (GB/GB) – AC Cobra 289 "I was frightened to death at Brands, but I really enjoyed it." #69 Dennis Singleton/Charlot Singleton (USA/USA) – Ferrari 275 GTB "No brakes at Brands; makes it exciting though! The car didn’t suit Brooklands very well, because it was a bit tight, but the fast parts at Longcross are nice; it was so exciting I went slower the second time through…” #75 Tim Bryan/Angus Archer (GB/GB) – Porsche 911S "Brands Hatch was a great start to the day. It's only Tuesday but it’s so much fun it's giving me a headache already!" #79 Geoff Lister/John Davenport (GB/GB) – Porsche 911 RS "I broke the gear lever in practice at Brands - but you've got to laugh about things like that haven't you? Longcross was fine and really it’s been a great first day.” #80 Nick Whale/Sally Wood (GB/GB) Porsche 911 Carrera RS "Brands was really disappointing; the car set-up was all wrong." #81 Howard Redhouse/Richard Shaw (IRL/GB) – Porsche 911 Carrera RS “A wonderful day! Brands Hatch was great, Brooklands was fine and Longcross was just wonderful – really quick and exciting.” #82 John Grant/Charles Elwell (GB/GB) – Chevron B16 "I started in third gear at Brands which meant I had a lot of catching up to do. Longcross was fabulous, I think we were flying over the brow and the flowing fast corners were terrific. It was an excellent stage.”
