ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (March 21, 2007) -
Historic Race Circuits of Elkhart Lake, in conjunction with the
Sports Car Club of America and the
Great Race, announced the first annual
Elkhart Lake Historic Rally, to be held in and around the Village of Elkhart Lake, Wis., on October 5th and 6th, 2007.
The
SCCA and
Great Race have recently agreed that SCCA will run regional rallies in a Great Race compatible format. The
Elkhart Lake Historic Rally will be run as time-speed-distance rally using the
Great Race compatible format and SCCA national points will be awarded. The rally is one of fifteen such events currently scheduled around the Country and one of only three Great Race compatible regional rallies where SCCA National Points can be earned.
The Village of Elkhart Lake is one of the most beautiful and historic resort communities in Wisconsin and has been a premier destination for automobile enthusiasts for over fifty years. In 1951 and 1952, the SCCA staged Monte Carlo rallies in conjunction with open road sports car races held on the roads around Elkhart Lake. The roads that comprised the race circuits have been recently preserved and listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U. S. Department of the Interior. Along with Watkins Glen, they are the only historic circuits in the United States so preserved. Elkhart Lake is also the home of Road America, one of the worlds premier closed circuit road racing venues where open wheel race cars, sports cars and sedans have dueled since 1955.
The 2007 Elkhart Lake Historic Rally celebrates the 55th anniversary of the 1951 and 1952 Monte Carlo rallies. The rallies were unique events where participants could start from any one of sixty-five cities around the Country and were allowed to select their own average speed. The objective was to arrive in the Village of Elkhart Lake at 5:00 pm on the Saturday of the race weekend. Check points along the route were major cities within each SCCA Region all within a days driving time of each other. As the rally teams progressed, increasing numbers of teams came together forming an ever growing tide of participants. At each check point, the local SCCA Region hosted a reception and the result was one of the largest moving parties in rally history.
The 2007 historic rally is open to cars of all vintages with special recognition for entries with a 1952 vintage or earlier. Check-in is planned for Friday, October 5th from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. (local time) at the historic Siebkens Resort. A wine and cheese reception is scheduled from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. following check-in. The rally starts on Saturday, October 6th at 9:00 a.m. in the Village and concludes at approximately 5:00 p.m. There will be a mid-day break for a buffet luncheon on the Lake Patio at the Osthoff Resort from noon to 1:30 p.m. A traditional Wisconsin “Beer and Brat” party is planned as part of the awards ceremony to be held on the Deck Bar at the Victorian Village Resort from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Awards will be made to teams competing in SCCA equipment categories (unlimited, limited and stock) with additional awards for best finish in a Great Race car and best finish in a vintage car of 1952 or prior. The wine and cheese reception, the buffet luncheon and the traditional “Beer and Brat” party are all complimentary for workers and participants.
