As entries closed for the
Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally, the total number of crews entered is now fifty-one. The ten-day rally runs from November 23rd to December 1st. The route is 4,500 km (2,800 miles) long and the rally organisers have covered some 28,000 km (17,300 miles) of reconnaissance to ensure that they have chosen the best and most challenging roads through Kenya and Tanzania. The
Safari Classic starts and finishes in Mombasa on Kenya's Indian Ocean coastline and will use many of the region's famous Safari lodges for its night halts including that at Amboseli where there is full day of rest, relaxation and rebuilding at the half-way point of the event.
Although the cars entered in the event date from the years of the old
classic Safaris in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the organisation and infrastructure on the
Safari Classic is thoroughly modern. Under its director, Surinder Thatthi, the event has a safety outfit that includes two fully equipped ambulances, a helicopter, a gyro-copter, two doctors, and four accident trauma qualified nurses all of whom will be following the event The medical outfit will be headed Dr. Harjinder Chagger, one of the leading FIA-licensed doctors who attends both Formula One and Touring Car races. In addition, over one hundred and fifty police per day, a total of 1,350 for the whole event, have been detailed off to ensure the smooth running of the rally.
