MotorMart AutoJumble Photos
Balmy was not a word that could be used to describe this year’s
MotorMart AutoJumble with strong winds, grey skies and heavy showers throughout the weekend, teased with the very occasional ray of sunshine. Fortunately AutoJumble aficionados are a hardy breed and their enthusiasm for the event transcended the weather, with attendance figures of 14,275 making it the second most successful in the show’s history, beaten only by the very first Spring AutoJumble in 1994. Stand spaces, including 167 vehicles in the MotorMart, totalled 1055, a further increase of over 50 on last year. Trading over the weekend was good with plenty of sales for exhibitors and buyers finding the prices very reasonable on the vast majority of stands.
The show’s MotorMarque feature this year celebrated 50 years of the Anglia 105E. The Ford Anglia 105E Owners Club put on a fine display of Anglias, including the unique 1959 ‘Pimp My Car’ Anglia, pimped by MTVs Pimp My Ride programme with a 1950s style diner in the boot, complete with juke box and hot dog and smoothie makers. At the close of the show each of the owners was presented with a commemorative gift by Lord Montagu.
There was the usual eclectic mix of vehicles for sale in the
MotorMart, including an attractive 1957 Ford Ranchero Pick-up in Torch Red, originally purchased at Pebble Beach, with an asking price of £22,000. Among other classics on offer were a 1961 Sunbeam Rapier Convertible, a 1986 Jaguar XJS V12, a Ford Model A Phaeton for £18,500 and a 1954 Riley 1½L for £6,250. Two early sales were a 1960 Morris Minor Convertible with an asking price of £5,250 and a 1965 Minor replica for £4,950. Anyone looking for an affordable restoration project had a choice between a 1950s Anglia and a Ford Poplar. Both vehicles had been barn stored for the last 24 years and looked in need of a little TLC.
Sunday trading was given a boost with the addition of the Sodbury Sortout with over 100 Land Rover stand holders arriving for their one day event. It was the Sortout’s second visit to Beaulieu and was declared by Sortout organiser, Jim Wilkie to be another great success. The other Sunday feature, Trunk Traders brought a welcome injection of new stock to the field and buying was brisk.
In the Marquee, there was the usual mix of stands selling books painting die-cast models etc. Contemporary painter Ian Cook, attracted quite an audience as he created his own unique artwork using radio control cars! On Saturday he painted a Jaguar XJR-8 to mark the National Motor Museum’s latest exhibition, ‘Jaguar Jamboree’ and on Sunday the 1959 Mini from the Museum collection.
Show sponsors, Classics Monthly, provided a fine display of ‘Readers’ Cars’ for the weekend, and there was a hum of activity coming from their ‘Restoration Village’ marquee where experts were demonstrating their expertise with hammers, spanners and welding gear as they worked on a couple of restoration projects.
The date of the 2010
MotorMart AutoJumble is 15th & 16th May.
