Jason Minshaw and Martin O’Connell shared the victories in two fabulous E-type Challenge races at the HSCC’s Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting (28/29 August). The victories for Minshaw and Stretton made it five winners in eight races in the E-type Challenge season and came after two enthralling races left the results in doubt until the flag. Seasoned race commentator Ian Titchmarsh described the races as two of the best of the 2011 season. The E-type Challenge, celebrating 50 years of the Jaguar E-type, is managed by the Historic Sports Car Club in conjunction with Jaguar Heritage and is supported by JD Classics and runs with two classes, for cars prepared to a period race trim and standard cars. The series moved to the Cheshire track for the concluding pair of races and from another capacity grid it was Jon Minshaw who claimed pole position during a very wet qualifying session. The car was offered in Bonhams Collectors’ Motor Cars and Automobilia Auction at the Goodwood Revival Meeting on 16 September, and is now sold for an undisclosed sum. The Jaguar will remain in the UK. In addition to the Jaguar, a further number of motor cars were sold over a busy weekend that collectively raises the sale total comfortably in excess of £6.5million. The Ropner Semi-Lightweight could trace its lineage to the now legendary batch of 12 Grand Touring competition cars known as the ‘Lightweight’ E-Types. The car was unique in this specification. Sir Robert Ropner, a north-eastern shipping company magnate, was a good customer of Jaguar and, in consultation with their Chief Engineer, Bill Heynes, a tailor made special order car was produced incorporating many Lightweight features. Bonhams Motor Cars and Automobilia Sale at the Goodwood Revival Meeting today (16 September 2011) made a total of £4,733,625 in a packed saleroom. Two Edwardian Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts vied with a 1971 Ferrari 365GTS/4 Daytona Spyder for top honours. The 1971 Ferrari Daytona Spyder with coachwork by Pininfarina - one of only 25 of European specification – sold for £595,500. One of only four surviving examples of the 1908 Silver Ghost sold for £485,500 after a protracted bidding battle, while the 1911 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost – a magnificent ceremonial car which was ordered for the Delhi Durbar celebration of the Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary in December 2011 – made £419,500. This Silver Ghost was emblazoned with the coat of arms of the Maharaja of Mysore, to whom it passed after the Delhi Durbar.
